Virtual Jamestown

As the 400-year anniversary of the 1607 Jamestown settlement approaches, Virtual Jamestown offers a high tech way to bring the historical events of that area to life. The site covers all the facets of the "Virginia Experience" and provides information and strategies for research, teaching and learning.

Students examine the habitat presented to the colonists upon their arrival to Jamestown. They are faced with various problems to consider, and the site provides them with actual documents, laws, papers, maps and artifacts of the era as resources. The challenges and problems that exploration and colonization present are examined. The historical events of Jamestown are displayed in such a way that students can compare them with other global historical events occuring at approximately the same time. Students learn the patterns of colonization in the early 17th century and compare them to contemporary relationships among governments.
