Bison,
Brucella & DNA: Research in Greater Yellowstone
Domestic
cattle in the Greater Yellowstone Area are infected with the Brucella
bacteria, causing them to abort their calves. Concerned ranchers blame
the bison in the park for the transmission of this disease and demand
the right to protect their cattle from the bison that each year stray
across park boundaries to seek food in the lower elevations immediately
adjacent to Yellowstone.
By comparing the
DNA structure of the types of Brucella found in a variety
of wildlife and in domestic cattle around Yellowstone, researchers
may see similarities that would lead to suggestions concerning transmission
and possible control of Brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area.
