2006 Professional Conference

NCSSSMST reserves the right to cancel workshops that do not have a minimum of 8 participants.  On site registration by space available. All Workshops at the UTSA Downtown Campus will be in the Buena Vista Building.  Stop by the registration desk to get your room assignment. Bus transportation schedule:  7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. shuttle between Marriott Riverwalk and UTSA Downtown Campus, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. There will be a welcome desk located in the Buena Vista Building.

Group I   All Day Workshops & Tours March 16, 2006

CODE: T1 = Birds, Wildflower and History Tour
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $45.00 Lunch provided.

This workshop involves a tour and review of the history and natural history of the San Antonio area. Participants in the workshop will be transported by bus to view spring wildflowers, an important bird habitat area for migrant birds and to tour the Alamo and three other Spanish Missions.

CODE: W1 = NASA Workshop – Systemic Thinking
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $45.00
Lunch provided.

Join Anthony Bruins, Systems Engineer/Visionary Architect form Johnson Space Center  for an exciting day of learning about “systemic thinking” using tools, processes and methodologies that support creative and innovative thinking.  The workshop will have four modules: Idea Generation, Intelligent Fast Failure, Paradigm Shifting and Organization. Participants will learn ho to “see the big picture” and will have strategies to help students address systemic challenges in the world today.

Group II  Morning Workshops  March 16, 2006

CODE: W3= MATH Workshop I - Incorporating Genuine Data & Modeling into Algebra & Precalculus Using TI-82/83/84 Graphing Calculators
9:00 – 11:30 a.m.
Cost $25.00

Lists, data plots, and regression allow students to explore polynomial, power, exponential, logarithmic, and logistic functions as models for analyzing relationships between variables presented as data tables and for predicting values not given in the tables.  The data will come from the U.S. census, probes, and other sources and tools.  Calculators will be provided during the workshop.

CODE: W4  = Schools Like Ours - Issues for Developing New and Emerging Consortium Schools
9:00 –11:30 a.m.

This workshop is targeted to board members, administrators, teachers and support staff of developing, new and emerging schools. The presenters include the editorial board of a NCSSSMST publication currently under development “Schools Like Ours.” The workshop will provide a discussion of the issues facing associate, new and emerging institutional members.

Group III  Afternoon Workshops  March 16, 2006

CODE: W5 = Math Workshop II - Using Cabri Jr Geometry Software on the TI-83/84 Graphing Calculator
1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $25.00

Cabri Jr allows students to explore plane geometry and make conjectures about geometric relationships, which can then be proved as theorems.  A variety of classroom activities will be presented along with teaching tips. Calculators will be provided during the workshop.

CODE:  W6 = Brain Research and Instruction: Applications in the Classroom
1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Cost $25.00

Breakthroughs in neuroscience have provided amazing insights into the human brain.  The applications and implications of brain research reach far into the field of education. Teachers now have the tools to tailor instruction to how the brain learns.  This workshop matches core principles of the brain and learning with instructional strategies.

Cost $35.00 (includes Guiding Student Research book)

Come to discuss and to participate in activities relating to managing student research opportunities in your current science or math course or developing a separate research course. Chapters from Guiding Student Research will be highlighted and additional course management tools will be provided. New and experienced research teachers are welcome! Be ready to ask good questions.
