1999 TILT Conference Teaching with Dinosaurs Keynote Address: Dr. John R. ("Jack") Horner, one of the world's foremost paleontologists and technical adviser for the film Jurassic Park, invites Virginia teachers to bring the excitement and drama of field research to K-12 students in his keynote address, Teaching with Dinosaurs, at the 1999 TILT Conference sponsored by Bell Atlantic, Toyota USA Foundation and Virginia Tech. Curator of paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, Dr. Horner has made hundreds of dinosaur discoveries, many of which have been highlighted on PBS and the Discovery Channel. Among these finds are the first dinosaur eggs discovered in North America, the first dinosaur embryos ever unearthed and the largest bed of dinosaur bones ever found, containing the fossils of thousands of duck-billed dinosaurs. Dr. Horner specializes in the study of duck-billed dinosaurs, their development and the environment in which they evolved. Although the discoveries themselves are featured in the slides he shares with teachers, equally fascinating are the revolutionary conclusions he draws about dinosaur behavior. In his most recent book Digging Up Tyrannosaurus Rex, named an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children, Dr. Horner brings readers on the discovery of the first complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found. Science Books and Films reviewed the book as "genuinely convey[ing] contemporary science in an entirely realistic manner, showing how nonscientists can play a role in the process, the importance of teamwork, and the part women play in science."
