Applied Meteorology CEE2984/GEOG2984

Course Information:

CEE2984 (CRN 16700)

GEOG2984 (CRN 16476)

Applied Meteorology is an online course covering weather forecasting and significant weather events. The course utilizes some of the best Internet-based meteorology sites, and introduces the student to such topics as atmospheric sounding products and forecast models. Special emphasis is placed on forecasting severe weather events. This special studies course is an excellent background course for those interested in possibly pursuing a course of study in meteorology, and is structured to be very user-friendly in accommodating busy student schedules. Students may opt to join the Great Plains Storm Chase in May (information below) after completing the course(3hr/3cr).

Components of the course include:

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Atmospheric basics & surface data plot evaluation
  • Buoyancy & adiabatic processes influencing strength of convection
  • Air pressure, winds, and jetstream influences on
  • Air masses and frontal identification
  • Atmospheric moisture and forecasting precipitation
  • Doppler radar, satellite imagery and severe weather signatures
  • Using forecast models for evaluating cyclogenesis
  • Hurricane forecasting
  • Instability & severe weather potential
  • Thunderstorm life cycle and hazards
  • Forecasting thunderstorm types using instability and wind parameters
  • Tornadoes and severe weather forecasting

2006 Storm Chase

Students interested in severe weather may want to consider joining the 2006 Great Plains Storm Chase (GEOG2984: Summer Session I), which will take place in May. This course is not for everyone, but rather those with an intense interest in severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Spaces will be made available for both credit (3hr/3cr) and non-credit options. Spaces are extremely limited, so contact the instructor as soon as possible if you are interested. See the link below for further information.
