Unit Overview
In this unit we will cover the spectrum of thunderstorms types. Keep in mind when studying this unit, that it is difficult to put any given thunderstorm into a specific category. Some thunderstorms display characteristics of more than one type, and many times a storm will evolve from one type into another during its lifespan. The general classification of storms provides us with some basic guidelines when looking at storm structure, which gives insight into what types of severe weather may occur.
It is recommended that you briefly look over all of the different types of storms first, and then return to each individual set of notes and study them more intensely.
