Unit 8 Overview They are often called the greatest storms on Earth. Feeding off the energy-rich warm oceans, and taking advantage of the forces involved in the rotating earth, these storms have been among the most devastating natural disasters known to man. In this unit, we will take a look at tropical cyclones. As the waters of the tropical oceans warm during the late summer, weather watchers and coastline residents look to the east for impending danger. We will study the conditions needed for hurricane development, where they get the energy to survive, and what threats they pose to life and property, and within a storm where those threats are greatest.
