Unit 8 Objectives & Applications

1) Identify the conditions necessary for the development of tropical cyclones, and the energy transfer within the atmosphere that aids in the storm's development.

2) Discuss the major characteristics of each stage of tropical cyclone development, and be able to evaluate each stage based on a combination of surface data, radar and satellite information.

3) Analyze the major threats to life and property posed by tropical storms and hurricanes, and discuss the factors involved in producing damaging storm surges, high winds/mini-swirls, flooding rainfall, and tornadoes.

4) Evaluate the major threats to a coastline from a landfalling tropical cyclone, and the favored locations within the storm for the peak storm surge, wind damage, and tornado development.
