May 21, near our favorite small town in Kansas: Downs. Tornado-warned, and producing baseball-sized hail, this storm affected primarily rural areas in north-central Kansas. LCL heights were rather high this day, favoring hail-producing supercells over tornadic ones. Here the chase team pauses for a photo-op with a dramatically striated wall cloud in the background. This was a rather intense chase, as we had to approach the cell from the northwest(a less than ideal position), and Kevin Myatt of the Roanoke Times provided radar input as we drove through the back side of the radar hook of this supercell. We pulled over twice as hail began to pound down.
