Rats! The one that got away. A picture of a tornadic supercell near Russell Kansas. The chase team might moan when they see this photo in the gallery. We positioned ourselves perfectly on this day. Two main towers fired near Hays Kansas on May 17, and we watched both storms develop. One storm became well organized and began to form a wall cloud, so we committed to that storm. As we approached the updraft, it weakened and died. Meanwhile, further east, and now out of reach, the other tower became the dominant storm. This photo shows the backsheared anvil from the tornadic storm. Part of chasing is dealing with frustrating events: this day, 24 hours in advance, we positioned ourselves within 12 miles of where a tornadic supercell would develop....but couldn't get to the storm in time!
